According to the Ministry of Health, over 75% of adults and 90% of children in Uganda suffer from oral health issues such as tooth decay annually.
Dr. Naftali Nabaasa a dental surgeon from Oral Health Uganda blames the increase in dental diseases among children and adults on a number of issues including the consumption of sugary food and poor hygiene.
In addition to consuming 'bad sugars', Dr. Nabaasa also stated that many Ugandans have poor brushing habits. He describes the right way of brushing as 'drawing zeros' on one's teeth.
Dr. Nabasa advises that one uses a soft toothbrush instead of a hard one, explaining that hard toothbrushes should only be used when prescribed by a dentist because they can injure the gum which can lead to infections.
The dental specialist warns that once the above precautions are not taken into account dental treatment may turn out to be expensive with charges on the open market in the vicinity of Kampala averaging at around 200,000.
